What is Rosacea?

Should you Treat Rosacea with Laser Therapy?

Rosacea (pronounced “roh-ZAY-sha”) is a chronic facial skin disorder, which can be characterized by recurring skin flare-ups. The condition typically begins after age 30 and the symptoms include a redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead and in some cases, rosacea may also occur on the scalp, chest, neck and/or the ears. These symptoms may come and go over time.  As a person with Rosacea ages, the redness tends to become darker with visible blood vessels and it also becomes much more persistent. If the Rosacea is left untreated, bumps and pimples often develop, and in severe cases the nose may become bulbous, swollen and bumpy from excess tissue. In some cases of rosacea, the eyes can also feel irritated and appear watery or bloodshot.

Although rosacea can affect all segments of the population, individuals with fair skin who tend to flush or blush easily are believed to be at greatest risk. The disease is more frequently diagnosed in women, but more severe symptoms tend to be seen in men — perhaps because they often delay seeking medical help until the disorder reaches advanced stages.

Unfortunately there is no cure for rosacea and the cause is unknown, but fortunately, it can be treated to control and even reverse its symptoms via medical therapies such as photo rejuvenation treatments. If you suspect you may have rosacea, we recommend you first to see a dermatologist or other knowledgeable physician for diagnosis. In many cases, your dermatologist will recommend you treat rosacea with laser therapy.

Primary Signs of Rosacea

  • Persistent Redness
    Persistent facial redness is the most common individual sign of rosacea, and may resemble a blush or sunburn that does not go away.
  • Flushing
    Many people with rosacea have a history of frequent blushing or flushing. This facial redness may come and go, and is often the earliest sign of the disorder.
  • Bumps and Pimples
    Small red solid bumps or pus-filled pimples often develop. While these may resemble acne, blackheads are not present and burning or stinging may occur.
  • Visible Blood Vessels
    In many people with rosacea, small blood vessels become visible on the skin.

Other Common Signs and Symptoms

  • Eye Irritation
    In many people with rosacea, the eyes may be irritated and appear watery or bloodshot, a condition known as ocular rosacea. The eyelids also may become red and swollen, and styes are common. Severe cases can result in corneal damage and vision loss without medical help.
  • Dry Appearance
    The central facial skin may be rough, and thus appear to be very dry.
  • Raised Red Patches or Plaques
    Raised red patches can develop without changes in the surrounding skin.
  • Thicker Skin
    The skin may thicken and enlarge from excess tissue, especially on the nose. This condition typically affects more men than women (likely because Men wait longer to seek help).
  • Swelling
    Facial swelling, known as edema, may accompany other signs of rosacea.
  • Burning or Stinging
    Burning or stinging sensations may often occur on the face. Itching or a feeling of tightness may also develop.
  • Signs Beyond the Face
    Rosacea signs and symptoms may also develop beyond the face, most commonly on the neck, chest, scalp or ears.

How is Rosacea Treated?

While there are numerous oral and topical medications that can help with the bumps and acne like symptoms temporarily, we recommend treating your rosacea with laser therapy for a more permanent treatment to not only assist in healing the bumps but also the redness, reduce and in some cases eliminate the blood vessels and most other symptoms. 12 Days of Beauty Tips – Tip # 9: 12 Harmful Skin Care Ingredients

Potentially Harmful Skin Care Ingredients that are also found in hair care products, baby products and cleaning products.

Do you know the saying: ‘You are what you eat’? Well, the same holds true for skin care products. When you place any product on your skin, your skin naturally absorbs it. Many people believe all the hype like looking 10 years younger, diminished wrinkles, firmer skin, etc. that most companies advertise. When in reality, most of the products that promise miraculous results can actually be toxic and result in more harm than good.

I used to believe every single ad and I did indeed try virtually every single product without questioning the ingredients. Not one of them lived up to the hype. Check out the following list of 12 potentially harmful skin care ingredients that you should watch out for before purchasing and massaging these products onto your precious skin. Some of these ingredients are linked to cancer, reproductive and developmental complications, DNA damage, brain and nervous system damage, contact dermatitis (rashes and irritation to the skin), or other health issues.

  1. Parabens (Phenoxyethanol, Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl): Used as preservatives and found in many creams or lotions, deodorants and other skin care products.
  2. Benzoyl Peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide is typically found in acne products.
  3. Propylene Glycol and Butylene Glycol (Plastics): A highly toxic material made from petroleum. It is so toxic, in fact, that the EPA requires full protective gear for anyone burying it in the ground to prevent brain, liver and kidney abnormalities.
  4. FD&C Color Pigments: Found in many beauty products, color pigments are synthesized from coal tar and contain heavy metal salts which are toxic to the skin and shown to be carcinogenic.
  5. Dioxins (triclosan, Polyethylene Glycol or PEGs and sodium laureth sulfate): Found in most non-organic tampons and linked to cancer an interfere with the immune system. Unfortunately, you won’t see ‘Dioxins’ listed as such on ingredients. Look for triclosan, PEGs and sodium laureth sulfate instead and steer clear.
  6. Triethanolamine (TEA, DEA, MEA): Not the good kind of tea. It is used to increase foam in cleansers and to adjust pH in many creams. Unfortunately, TEA is easily absorbed by the skin and accumulates in the organs of the body and the brain.
  7. Formaldehyde (DMDM hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl urea, Diazolidinyl urea, Quaternium-15, Bronopol, 5-Bromo-5-nitro-1, Hydroxymethylglycinate): typically found in nail polish, eyelash glue, and hair smoothing and straightening products. These ingredients are used as preservatives and release formaldehyde which is linked to cancer, allergies, chronic fatigue, depression, ear infections, insomnia, ear infections and headaches.
  8. Phthalates: Can be found in personal care and skin care items including soaps, body washes, cleansers, shampoos, cosmetics, nail polishes, hair spray and baby care products and usually not listed on the label.
  9. Triclosan: used as an antibacterial agent in creams and lotions. Even the EPA has listed it as a pesticide that damages human health and the environment. It is used as an antibacterial agent in in creams and lotions. It is classified as a chlorophenol which can cause cancer in humans.
  10. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): used as foaming agents and degreasers in shampoos and found in 90% of all products that foam. SLS and SLES have been linked to eye damage, labored breathing, depression, skin irritation and diarrhea.

  11. Toluene (benzene, methylbenzene, toluol and phenylmethane): Found in many nail polishes, even ones that are supposed to be safe from Toluene. Also found in hair coloring products.
  12. Sunscreen Chemicals (avobenzone, benzophenone and ethoxycinnamate): These are known to generate free radicals which can lead to cancer and DNA damage.

Our recommendations when confronted with these harmful skin care ingredients is to try to avoid them. Always check ingredients of the products you are interested in purchasing and if there is no ingredient list, do NOT purchase them no matter what their miracle claims are. Try to search for skin care solutions that are organic, like AnnMarie Gianni or NaturaVeda.

So please remember “Buyer Beware!” and Be Aware ALL the time!

The right way to apply makeup - Beauty Tip

12 Days of Beauty Tips # 8 – The Right Way to Apply Makeup

We all have that friend that cakes on her foundation, mascara, eye liner blush and lipstick and ultimately looks like a clown. Now if you are a good friend, you will tell her how ridiculous she looks (using somewhat nicer language hopefully). If you are a really good friend, you will send her this article which will teach her the right way to apply makeup for any age, complexion and/or occasion.

There are two messages you should take away from this article and they are: less is more (LIM) and keep it simple stupid (KISS).

Moisturizer and Eye Cream

First, make sure your hands are clean and apply your favorite eye cream using your ring finger on either hand. Massage in circular motions around your eyes for thirty seconds. Next, choose a moisturizer with SPF protection, place a quarter sized amount in your palm using a cotton swab or clean applicator, warm it up in your hands and press it into your face, neck and chest. Massage it in an upward motion on your chest, neck and jowls and a circular motion on the face for thirty seconds.

Primer or Foundation

We recommend either a primer OR a foundation for most days. The primer will help create a beautiful even toned canvas for the rest of your makeup application. Be sure you apply it in the same way as your moisturizer and don’t neglect your neck. If you opt for foundation and prefer something lighter, we recommend using a tinted moisturizer. For special events and occasions, you can opt for a heavier foundation in order to optimize those ‘photo op’ moments. The best way to apply foundation is to use a make-up sponge. After applying it, flip the sponge over and buff it into your face using the dry side of the sponge. Be sure to use a tone that is similar to your neck tone.


For days when you have dark circles under your eyes or blemishes, use concealer to help cover them up. You could also use it to cover up broken capillaries and conditions like rosacea. We recommend purchasing a lighter shade and a darker shade and blend them together on the back of your hand with a brush in order to get a custom camouflage color. Test the shade on your chin first. When you’re happy with it, gently brush a bit of concealer onto the area where you need it and then press it in with your finger until the area is covered.


Next, use facial powder to set your foundation and help to prevent your skin from getting too oily or too shiny. It will also make your face look smoother and more even toned. You can use a puff or a powder brush. Be sure to blow off the excess powder before applying.

Eye Shadow

If you wear eye shadow, you will want to first apply eye shadow primer or for even longer lasting lids, use a cream shadow over powder. We recommend darker shades in the crease and lighter shades on the lid and orbital bone. User a powder brush and not the applicator to apply and blend powder shadows. You could use your finger or foam to apply cream shadows. Always start in the center and smooth out to the left and then the right.

Eye Liner

Eye liner can open up your eyes, making them pop and bring more volume to your lashes. Line your upper lash line and/or lower lash line by aiming for the roots of your lashes. Apply it and then smudge it with a brush to blur it a bit. Do not apply to the waterline (the inside of your eye) as it can cause infections.


Before applying mascara, use an eye lash curler in three quick stages. Start at the base, then move to the mid-section and then finally curl the upper end of your lashes. To apply the mascara, start at the base of your lashes and wiggle the wand a bit as you pull it up through the lashes. Repeat one time on each lash. Use a light circular motion on baby lashes. Then, wipe off the brush and very lightly apply to the bottom lashes. We recommend waterproof mascara only if you are doing something active (swimming, skiing, etc.).


Blush will help you look even more radiant when applied correctly. A little blush goes a long way. It is important not to over apply and use a shade that looks natural on you. Do not apply it below the cheekbones as they used to do in the 70s and 80s. Instead, brush it right on top of your cheekbone (this is higher than the apple of your cheeks). It will look more natural and lift your features. Use blush sticks for longer lasting results.


Finally, use lip color with your moods. It can help you express yourself so you can have many different shades and colors for many different occasions. When applying lipstick, use a brush, dab some in the middle of your bottom lip and then roll your lips together to help distribute it. Then add the color to the rest of your lips. For a glossy look, add a small amount of lip gloss over the color. There are many long lasting lip sticks available today, however, we do not recommend these as they are damaging to your lips. If you would like to plump your lips a bit, get yourself some cinnamon essential oil and mix a drop of it with jojoba oil or your lip gloss. Make sure you test it before using it as some people are very sensitive to pure cinnamon.

You’ve been told by your Mother, your Dermatologist, your Esthetician, your doctor and your Grandmother, over and over and over again, to wear more sunscreen, keep re-applying during the day and make sure that it contains at the very least 30 SPF protection. Well, guess what people? Studies have shown that brief periods of unprotected sun exposure is actually beneficial to you and your skin.

Some of the benefits include heart disease reduction, diabetes prevention, Multiple Sclerosis prevention, cavity prevention, aches and pain relief, boosts fertility, reduces the risk of certain cancers, reduces issues with menstruation, Helps to heal skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne and eczema, assistance with weight reduction, eases Inflammatory Bowel Disorders, increases your energy level and last but not least, sun exposure makes you happy!

So don’t worry if you forget to put your sunscreen on for a half hour in the morning before 10am or in the afternoon after 2pm and let that fantastic Vitamin D seep into your skin and your soul.

That being said, you absolutely DO need protection if you are going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time because over exposure can indeed cause skin cancer, wrinkles, permanent sun spots or damaged skin.

My 11 year old neighbor, Mackenzie, recently performed a science experiment for school where she compared five different sunscreens and determined that the best sunscreen to buy with regards to ingredients and effectiveness is Palmer’s which you could find at any grocery or super store or pharmacy. Her experiment won second place throughout the entire sixth grade class!

This is no joke. Remember all those times your Mom told you to stop eating chocolate because you will break out and get fat, well, guess what – she was WRONG! At least with dark chocolate, which is not only good for you, but it is great for your body and your skin. The Flavonoids found in dark chocolate protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays (this does not mean you could throw away the sunscreen, however). Regular consumption of dark chocolate will help you achieve a smooth and problem-free complexion by keeping your skin moist and well nourished. The flavonoids antioxidant properties can also help prevent blood clots and stroke, thus reducing the risk of heart attacks. It also helps to keep your blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure in check. When you are feeling stressed, pop in a little dark chocolate to help reduce your elevated stress hormones! Studies have shown that dark chocolate can strengthen your brain, your vision, improve your blood flow, increases your endurance, help control coughs and can help you live longer.

There are so many skin care options available and if you decide to purchase toners, anti-aging creams, facial masks, moisturizers, eye creams, lip treatments, neck treatments, etc., please make sure you review the list of ingredients to verify they are all natural. We recommend you try testers for a few days to see how your skin reacts and only test one product at a time. Believe it or not, topical creams and toners have been known to cause not just minor issues like acne and early signs of aging but also bigger problems like hormonal issues such as irregular periods, allergies, infertility and even cancer. These are serious reactions to simple, over the counter daily face regimens that you have the power to control just by taking a little extra time one day a week to make your very own skin care line, made especially for you!

Take a look at some of these foods, oils and even spices that can help you look and feel your best. It is a great anti-aging remedy that can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles if used daily. It can be used to fight fungal infections and psoriasis. It is also very helpful in reducing hair loss when applied to the scalp. Add it to your bath or apply it topically. You may want to incorporate it into a facial mask with other beneficial ingredients and was if off after 20 minutes, or apply it alone in the evening before bed.
Apple Cider Vinegar Helps to kill pathogens (like bacteria), clears skin problems caused by digestive issues, cleanses the skin and helps to stop acne, and can also be used as an anti-fungal treatment. It also has major digestive system and liver function benefits when consumed orally. Best used as a facial wash by diluting with water (depending on how sensitive your skin is, you can do anywhere from a 1:5 ratio – 1 TBSP of ACV to 5 TBSP of purified water – to a 1:2 ratio). Take a clean cotton ball and apply the mixture. Then apply to your face and neck using upward motions from bottom to top. Add a few drops to all of your facial mask concoctions.
Green Tea or White Tea Studies show that topical green or white tea can help to protect the skin from cancer. Other benefits include better skin tone and complexion, treat acne or pimples, reduce puffy eyes and dark circles, fights the signs of aging, and stimulates hair growth. There are too many benefits for the consumption of green and white tea to mention here. Check out: and for more health benefits. * remember that if you suffer from hypo-thyroidism, green tea is not good for you to consume, you should opt for white tea. To fight your puffy eyes and/or dark circles, place two used tea bags in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Place on your closed eyelids for 15 minutes. Repeat this twice a day until you see optimal results. To treat acne or pimples, simply brew the tea with warm water. Apply to affected area with a cotton ball and allow to dry. You can also brew the tea with warm water and let cool, add to a spray bottle with a drop of orange essential oil and voila – you created your own skin toner. There are many different types of masks you can make with tea. Be sure to scoop out the used tea contents and mix with your other ingredients such as plain yogurt and turmeric for an anti-aging mask. For hair growth stimulation, rinse your hair with freshly brewed tea. Leave it on for 10 minutes, then rinse it off with cool water. Do this 2 or 3 times a week for a couple of months.
Raw Honey Raw honey is one of the best natural sources of nutrients, enzymes, vitamins and skin-boosting acids. It can help reduce breakouts, provide moisture to your skin, can be used as an antiseptic treatment, help heal scrapes and cuts, fights allergies, rashes and itchy skin, and helps to reduce scars. Add raw honey to any or all of your facial masks for added benefits and nutrients. To use it as an exfoliator for dry winter skin, try adding two cups of honey to a bath, soak for 15 minutes, then add one cup of baking soda for the final 15 minutes. Your skin will thank you!

Clean Out Your Makeup Drawer TODAY!!

Do you hoard old make-up ‘just in case’ or because you can’t find the same color or brand that you’ve loved for so long? What if I told you that cosmetics expire sooner than you think and these expired cosmetics can cause skin irritations and eye infections. Cosmetics don’t typically have expiration dates on them, so you should try to keep track of when you open each item.

You can use your common sense to help you determine when to toss your expired cosmetics. For example, if your lipstick starts to smell funny or your lip gloss gets too gooey, your mascara starts to clot and congeal or your nail polish starts to separate, you will know that it is time to invest in new ones. I’ll be the first to admit that I am guilty of holding onto lipstick that I loved in the 90s and adding nail polish remover to all my nail polish when it gets old and thick. I used to keep my mascara for six months to a year after opening it and then I would wonder why my eyes would tear every time I walked outside and why my vision deteriorated so quickly.
