Sun exposure

12 Days of Beauty Tips # 7 – The Truth About Sun Exposure

You’ve been told by your Mother, your Dermatologist, your Esthetician, your doctor and your Grandmother, over and over and over again, to wear more sunscreen, keep re-applying during the day and make sure that it contains at the very least 30 SPF protection. Well, guess what people? Studies have shown that brief periods of unprotected sun exposure is actually beneficial to you and your skin.

Some of the benefits include heart disease reduction, diabetes prevention, Multiple Sclerosis prevention, cavity prevention, aches and pain relief, boosts fertility, reduces the risk of certain cancers, reduces issues with menstruation, Helps to heal skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne and eczema, assistance with weight reduction, eases Inflammatory Bowel Disorders, increases your energy level and last but not least, sun exposure makes you happy!

So don’t worry if you forget to put your sunscreen on for a half hour in the morning before 10am or in the afternoon after 2pm and let that fantastic Vitamin D seep into your skin and your soul.

That being said, you absolutely DO need protection if you are going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time because over exposure can indeed cause skin cancer, wrinkles, permanent sun spots or damaged skin.

My 11 year old neighbor, Mackenzie, recently performed a science experiment for school where she compared five different sunscreens and determined that the best sunscreen to buy with regards to ingredients and effectiveness is Palmer’s which you could find at any grocery or super store or pharmacy. Her experiment won second place throughout the entire sixth grade class!

We also found this great article about the best and worst scoring sunscreens that you should check out on the EWG website.

In addition, it is imperative to have full sun protection after one of the Renew Skin and Laser treatments. Leslie will direct you with the details about your sun exposure for each treatment.

12 Days of Beauty Tips #6 – Eat More Chocolate!

This is no joke. Remember all those times your Mom told you to stop eating chocolate because you will break out and get fat, well, guess what – she was WRONG! At least with dark chocolate, which is not only good for you, but it is great for your body and your skin. The Flavonoids found in dark chocolate protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays (this does not mean you could throw away the sunscreen, however). Regular consumption of dark chocolate will help you achieve a smooth and problem-free complexion by keeping your skin moist and well nourished. The flavonoids antioxidant properties can also help prevent blood clots and stroke, thus reducing the risk of heart attacks. It also helps to keep your blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure in check. When you are feeling stressed, pop in a little dark chocolate to help reduce your elevated stress hormones! It is also a very effective anti-inflammatory

Studies have shown that dark chocolate can strengthen your brain, your vision, improve your blood flow, increases your endurance, help control coughs and can help you live longer.

Many nutritionists recommend starting your day with a small amount of dark chocolate (1.5 – 3 ounces) to help give you energy, burn more calories and boost your mood. My favorite dark chocolate is from Theo Organic Fair Trade Chocolate, which could be found at most grocery stores throughout Colorado. Please share with us your favorite dark chocolate so we can give some other brands a try!

12 Days of Beauty Tips – Tip # 5

Natural Skin Care Remedies!

In all aspects of life, it is better to opt for natural remedies versus expensive store-bought ones that likely use toxic chemicals and fragrances. There are so many skin care options available and if you decide to purchase toners, anti-aging creams, facial masks, moisturizers, eye creams, lip treatments, neck treatments, etc., please make sure you review the list of ingredients to verify they are all natural. We recommend you try testers for a few days to see how your skin reacts and only test one product at a time. Believe it or not, topical creams and toners have been known to cause not just minor issues like acne and early signs of aging but also bigger problems like hormonal issues such as irregular periods, allergies, infertility and even cancer. These are serious reactions to simple, over the counter daily face regimens that you have the power to control just by taking a little extra time one day a week to make your very own skin care line, made especially for you!

Take a look at some of these foods, oils and even spices that can help you look and feel your best. Mix and match them based on your skin type and then let us know how you feel after doing this for yourself for 30 days. We have a feeling you will never go back to store bought brands. And who knows… maybe you will find a miracle combination that you would like to share with the world – package it, market it, and voila – you become the next Clinique, but only better since your brand is all natural and organic! I have literally saved thousands of dollars in product since I started doing this and my skin has been in the best shape it has ever been in.

Coconut Oil removes dead skin cells, protects us from sunburns, strengthens underlying epidermal tissue, and contains antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties. It goes without saying that there a also an incredible number of benefits when ingested as well including improved digestive function and improved immune system. Olive Oil contains three major antioxidant properties: vitamin E, polyphenols, and phytosterols that may help protect the skin from premature skin aging. The Vitamin E in Olive Oil restores skin smoothness and protects agains UV Rays. Much like coconut oil, you can use olive oil on your skin, nails and cuticles. Replace your shaving cream to get a smoother shave or use it as a post shower moisturizer and aftershave. Mix it with Himalayan sea salt or brown sugar to create a natural exfoliating scrub or mix it with any of the ingredients listed here to create your own unique facial or body mask.

It is also very helpful in reducing hair loss when applied to the scalp. Add it to your bath or apply it topically. You may want to incorporate it into a facial mask with other beneficial ingredients and was if off after 20 minutes, or apply it alone in the evening before bed.
Apple Cider Vinegar Helps to kill pathogens (like bacteria), clears skin problems caused by digestive issues, cleanses the skin and helps to stop acne, and can also be used as an anti-fungal treatment. It also has major digestive system and liver function benefits when consumed orally. Best used as a facial wash by diluting with water (depending on how sensitive your skin is, you can do anywhere from a 1:5 ratio – 1 TBSP of ACV to 5 TBSP of purified water – to a 1:2 ratio). Take a clean cotton ball and apply the mixture. Then apply to your face and neck using upward motions from bottom to top. Add a few drops to all of your facial mask concoctions.
Green Tea or White Tea Studies show that topical green or white tea can help to protect the skin from cancer. Other benefits include better skin tone and complexion, treat acne or pimples, reduce puffy eyes and dark circles, fights the signs of aging, and stimulates hair growth. There are too many benefits for the consumption of green and white tea to mention here. Check out: and for more health benefits. * remember that if you suffer from hypo-thyroidism, green tea is not good for you to consume, you should opt for white tea. To fight your puffy eyes and/or dark circles, place two used tea bags in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Place on your closed eyelids for 15 minutes. Repeat this twice a day until you see optimal results. To treat acne or pimples, simply brew the tea with warm water. Apply to affected area with a cotton ball and allow to dry. You can also brew the tea with warm water and let cool, add to a spray bottle with a drop of orange essential oil and voila – you created your own skin toner. There are many different types of masks you can make with tea. Be sure to scoop out the used tea contents and mix with your other ingredients such as plain yogurt and turmeric for an anti-aging mask. For hair growth stimulation, rinse your hair with freshly brewed tea. Leave it on for 10 minutes, then rinse it off with cool water. Do this 2 or 3 times a week for a couple of months.
Raw Honey Raw honey is one of the best natural sources of nutrients, enzymes, vitamins and skin-boosting acids. It can help reduce breakouts, provide moisture to your skin, can be used as an antiseptic treatment, help heal scrapes and cuts, fights allergies, rashes and itchy skin, and helps to reduce scars. Add raw honey to any or all of your facial masks for added benefits and nutrients. To use it as an exfoliator for dry winter skin, try adding two cups of honey to a bath, soak for 15 minutes, then add one cup of baking soda for the final 15 minutes. Your skin will thank you!
Himalayan or Celtic Sea Salts Sea salts contain the same minerals and nutrients like magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium that are naturally found in our skin, which is why it can help to balance, protect and restore our skin. Try mixing two teaspoons sea salt with four teaspoons raw honey and one teaspoon olive oil, then apply the mix evenly to clean skin, rub it gently for 2 minutes, let it stand for 15 minutes and rinse
Turmeric Improves skin elasticity, helps reduce facial hair growth, lighten pigmentation including stretch marks and age spots and even skin tone, help control oily skin, cures acne, heals cracked heels and skin and helps to control dandruff and hair loss. Or try it in a scrub with ground coffee, sea salt or raw sugar and avocado oil. Before adding cinnamon oil to your mask ingredients, be sure to test it on your skin as some people have complained of allergic reactions to the essential oil. Powdered cinnamon does not have the same affect. I made the mistake of adding a drop to my lip gloss and while it worked to plump my lips, when my girlfriend tried it, she immediately started getting sores on her lips. It wasn’t pretty and she wasn’t very happy with me.
Black Pepper Black pepper is rich in potassium, magnesium, iron and vitamins C and K. It is a great ingredient to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots and pigmentation issues when used topically. It also works to reduce inflammation of the skin when applies topically and can do the same internally when eaten. Before adding cinnamon oil to your mask ingredients, be sure to test it on your skin as some people have complained of allergic reactions to the essential oil. Powdered cinnamon does not have the same affect. Make a raw honey, cinnamon powder, turmeric and nutmeg facial mask. Or try it in a scrub with ground coffee, sea salt or raw sugar and avocado oil.!
Bananas High in potassium and vitamin A, bananas will hydrate and moisturize your skin giving it a very healthy and youthful glow and at the same time, help control oily skin. It helps in reducing the signs of aging. There are so many ways to use and apply bananas to your skin for all the health benefits that they would take a very long time to list. Luckily, there are many resources out that that can assist us. Check out for a variety of applications!
Plain Yogurt Use plain yogurt on your skin to help fight infections, improve pigmentation, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, fight acne, soothe sunburns and reduce dark circles. It also conditions hair, reduces hair loss and treats dandruff. Add it as a key ingredient to all of your facial masks. Try it in combination with cocoa and raw honey to help moisturize. Combine it with aloe vera gel and coconut oil for a natural hair conditioner. Combine it with oats and turmeric to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Apply it with a cotton ball directly to acne, under the eyes to repair dark circles or add a little lemon juice to fix age spots and pigmentation issues.

We could go on and on with every spice, essential oil, fruit and vegetable you can think of to achieve various health benefits for your skin, hair and nails. If you are wondering about the benefits of any natural ingredient that is not listed here, simply perform a Google search and decide for yourself if it should be added to your own personal skin care line that you create! Try cucumbers, mustard oil, oats, milk, red pepper, grapefruit, lemons, garbanzo beans, eggs, just to name a few that I use frequently in my own remedies.

It goes without saying that we recommend only organic ingredients, but if they are not available to you, non-gmo products will work just fine.

Cosmetic expiration dates

12 Days of Beauty Tips – Tip # 4

Clean Out Your Makeup Drawer TODAY!!

Do you hoard old make-up ‘just in case’ or because you can’t find the same color or brand that you’ve loved for so long? What if I told you that cosmetics expire sooner than you think and these expired cosmetics can cause skin irritations and eye infections. Cosmetics don’t typically have expiration dates on them, so you should try to keep track of when you open each item.

You can use your common sense to help you determine when to toss your expired cosmetics. For example, if your lipstick starts to smell funny or your lip gloss gets too gooey, your mascara starts to clot and congeal or your nail polish starts to separate, you will know that it is time to invest in new ones. I’ll be the first to admit that I am guilty of holding onto lipstick that I loved in the 90s and adding nail polish remover to all my nail polish when it gets old and thick. I used to keep my mascara for six months to a year after opening it and then I would wonder why my eyes would tear every time I walked outside and why my vision deteriorated so quickly.

Alternatively, you could use the following chart to guide you on when you should toss your expired cosmetics.

Concealers, Creams – shadows, blushes or foundation 12 – 18 months
Lipsticks and lipliners 12 months
Lipgloss 18 – 24 months
Liquid or gel eyeliner 3 months
Mascara 3 months
Oil-free foundation 12 months
Pencil eyeliner 24 months
Powders – blushes, bronzers, shadows 24 months
Complete Detox Tips

12 Days of Beauty Tips – Tip #3

So the holidays are over and we all survived (some better than others) – we looked and felt great for our holiday parties, but then ate and drank a wee bit too much at various celebrations, dinners and events, leaving us feeling bloated, swollen, lethargic and depressed with way too many blemishes and other skin irritations.

New Years Resolutions are just a start to getting back your mojo and of course the most popular resolution is to cleanse or detox. Some people detox for 10 days, some for 12, some for 28, 30 or even more. We recommend a detox at least twice per year.

Detoxification is a good way to ‘re-set’ or heal your liver, which in turn helps your whole entire system work more efficiently, improving your metabolism, digestive system, blood circulation, energy and stress levels and overall health.

There are many detox programs out there. Some are free and some are very expensive. We do not recommend doing extreme cleanses like the 7 day Master Cleanse. We recommend that you start by identifying all the toxic things that you have allowed in your life for so long, be it unhealthy food items, bad habits, drugs or other unhealthy vices and even negative people and relationships. The next step is to write down what you want to remove from your life, even if it is only temporarily. Share your intentions with family and friends in order to keep it real. Finally, get prepared by first cleaning out your fridge/freezer/pantry and next creating a shopping list, stocking up on the items that you need, setting a start date, creating a journal and tracking your progress. There are many apps that you can use also that can help motivate you and also help you track your progress, for example, you can check out Fat Flush to help you get started.

One product that we recommend for you to take while you are naturally detoxing is the Clear Change 10 Day Program by Metagenics. You could read more about it on Dr. Kent’s health blog at: I will be starting mine tomorrow in fact!

I start by eating real and raw. Twice a year, I remove sugar, dairy, gluten, alcohol and caffeine from my diet for thirty days, and yes, I am a world class capital B – itch for about the first five days with headaches and strange things going on in the bathroom but after getting over that hump, everything becomes more clear, and much more optimistic. My skin glows, I feel lighter on my feet, I sleep through the night and sleep more soundly, I can fit into old clothes that have been hidden in my basement for years and I am much more pleasant to be around. Another benefit to starting your detox (at least for me) is that it is not recommended to work out too hard during your detox, instead a little light exercise will do you just fine during this period.

Some things I do include in my diet are hard boiled eggs (some cleanses don’t allow eggs), homemade organic oatmeal with sliced apples, cinnamon and honey, organic miso soup, salmon, lots and lots of vegetables and salads, raw almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, legumes (all varieties of beans) and decaf green tea, just to name a few of my favorites. Juicing is another great way to get the nutrients you need while detoxing. There are so many great recipes that are easy to prepare that you could find that would adhere to the rules of a raw detox and so many resources out there for you to use for your research.

Here’s one of my favorite recipes that I prepare for dinner often whether I am detoxing or not:
Nachos Grande
a handful (typically 10-12) of organic rice or blue corn tortilla chips
2 Tbsp organic black beans
2 Tbsp dairy free shredded cheese (optional)
1 Sliced organic large tomato
1/2 cup chopped organic iceberg lettuce
1 sliced avocado
2 Tbsp organic medium spiced salsa
1 Tbsp raw chopped organic jalepeno
1 Tbsp chopped green onion
1 Tbsp chopped black olives

Sprinkle black beans, green onion, jalepeno, black olives and dairy free cheese onto the tortilla chips
Microwave on high for 1 and 1/2 minutes
Sprinkle the rest of the ingredients onto the dish and enjoy!

I would be happy to share some amazing recipes with you if you are interested. Simply comment on this article, let me know what types of foods you like and I’ll send you some great recipes to get you started. Good luck with your detox. Let us know how your are doing and if you have any questions. We are here to help motivate and support you!

Learn the right way to shower

Countdown to the Holidays – Beauty Tip 2

How often do you shower? Every day? What if I told you that frequent showering (like every day or even every other day), may be doing more harm than good? The reason being is that by showering, you are washing away natural oils and processes that your skin, hair and nails need.

If you are like me (a working Mom with little time to even hit the loo, every day, let alone shower), this is great news. On the other hand, if you are like me and cherish those 15 minutes of warmth and quiet reflection time, this recommendation might not be as welcoming.

In either case, we recommend showering anywhere from one to three days a week depending on the climate you live in, your age, your gender and your activity level. You could wash only the grimiest, smelliest parts of your body daily using wash cloths, wet wipes, or even jumping in the shower and only lathering those parts of your body up.

Not to mention, you will also be helping the environment by conserving water when you cut down on your showering routine.

So here is another shower recommendation that is going to blow your mind…
At the end of your nice hot, steamy shower, turn the knob to 100% cold (you could work up to this). You will be amazed at the health benefits that a cold shower has. I myself, have seen some incredible transformations in just 6 weeks of doing this. It all started when I celebrated Leslie’s 50th birthday with her at a spa in Bachelor Gulch, CO. They had an ice cold bath sitting next to the hot tub in the ladies locker room. I jumped in after the steam room, sauna and hot tub and lasted less than a minute, but I felt completely energized afterwards. When we went out that evening, my hair and skin felt incredibly healthy and overall, I felt fantastic. Then I did some research and found out that cold water not only increases alertness, but it refines hair and skin, stimulates weight loss, speeds up muscle recovery, reduces stress and anxiety and improves circulation and immunity. Try it out for yourself and let us know how it is working out for you!

Feel free to call us at 303.547.0671 if you have any questions about this article or to schedule your free consultation with us or an appointment for photo rejuvenation or laser hair removal! You can also schedule your appointment online.

Drink more water

Countdown to the Holidays – Beauty Tip 1

You have heard this a b’zillion times – this is no secret and likely the most important beauty tip to abide by…

The good news is that Coffee and Tea count towards your daily intake of H2O (beer and wine don’t – sorry gang). The bad news is that you will probably have to spend a little more time in the bathroom each day, but trust me when I tell you that your skin will thank you in the end.

You are all different and require a different amount of hydration for your body to function at its best, but the general recommendation is that you should try to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day.” For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75 to 150 ounces of water a day. There are many factors that you should take into consideration when you calculate your water intake number for each day including, your size, weight, activity level, the amount you sweat, the color of your urnine and believe it or not, the weather.

This is a great tool that I like to use when I am in doubt or I switch up my activities or the weather changes: Hydration Calculator

The key to being successful is to find either a great camelbak or 16 oz or larger water bottle that you can take with you everywhere. Sip on it when you are at work, sitting in front of your computer, killing time looking at FB posts, sitting in traffic on your way up to the mountains (or wherever you are heading), waiting at the Docs office, waiting for your hair removal treatment at Renew Skin and Laser, preparing your meals, etc. – you get the picture. When I DON’T like to drink water is after 7pm. I am sure you can figure out why, but just to be a bit more clear, my bladder does not work as well as it used to and I don’t like having to get out of bed in the middle of a deep, wonderful dream. 😀

The other important lesson to be learned about your water is that you should be drinking filtered water as much as you can and ween yourself off of tap water. A little tap water is not going to kill you and there are many areas where the tap water is actually almost as healthy as filtered. I am a huge fan of the Aquasana filter and have been using it in my home for years. It is a reverse osmosis filter, removing harmful chemicals, while maintaining important water elements that are good for you. This is a good chart that can assist you with finding the filter system that is right for you: Water Filter Comparison Chart.

Please join Renew Skin and Laser in becoming a healthier you, with healthier skin by committing to drink more water! You will be surprised at the difference this little change will make in your health and appearance…just in time for the holiday parties!!

Why and When You Should Get Photo Rejuvenation

I am a 49 year old woman who has been fighting Father time for 16 years, since my ex-boyfriend of 10+ years left me broken-hearted and very aware of being thrown back into the singles scene at the ‘ripe old age of 32’ (which is how I actually felt at the time – HA).  Although I was always conscious about my looks and cared very much about both looking and feeling young, it was at this point in my life that I realized, I should probably spend a little more time taking care of myself.

Mind you, this was in the year 2000, when all these non-invasive anti-aging treatments were considered very new.  I didn’t care.  I was ready to try anything and I did – I tried quite a few including Botox every six months, 5 IPL treatments and annual maintenance, Juvederm fillers, Laser hair removal, micro-dermabrasion treatments and chemical peels.  I also spend a lot of time researching the best methods used for anti-aging (since they are always changing) and have investigated holistic healing, natural skin care regimens / routines and hormonal health.

You see, I have fair skin and my entire life, I have had these freckles on my face – not just freckles – they were like these dark brown unattractive age spots that grew larger in the sun and started melding together until my face looked blotchy and deformed.  In fact, when I was in 7th grade, my science teacher, asked me to come up to the front of the class and when I did, he took a sharpie and said we were going to play connect the dots on my face.  The entire class laughed at me, much to my dismay and Mr. Weiner (Yeah – I know), thought he was the funniest teacher in the world.

IPL, sometimes known as Photo Rejuvenation or Photo facial, honestly saved me when I was 32.  I went five times in five months and I was this new woman.  Not only were all my freckles completely gone, but my skin was tighter and it helped diminish some wrinkles that I had noticed were just forming around my eyes.  It was the best investment I have ever made – not only is it quick and simple, but there is very little down time, no pain or discomfort and it is reasonably priced.

Right now is the best time to start your Photo Rejuvenation treatments (in the fall), when your tan is faded and you know you will not be spending a lot of time outside in the sun.  Also, you want to see the best results just before the holidays when you will be going to dinners and parties, and maybe a parade or two. So if you are finally ready to take that first step to clear, beautiful and younger looking skin, you should call Renew Skin and Laser at 303.547.0671, schedule online now or email Leslie for more information.

How to prevent your skin from aging

Easy Tips to Keep Your Skin from Aging

Moisturize your skin. Especially in a dry climate like Colorado, moisturize twice a day and exfoliate. Be sure to use moisturizer that matches your skin type.

Drink plenty of water. Again, with a dryer climate, it’s more important to stay hydrated, helping your skin keep it’s healthy glow. Eight glasses of water is recommended to keep skin supple and maintain its elasticity. Hydration also helps with overall health, digestion, circulation, absorption and even excretion. The lack of hydration will present itself by turning your skin dry, tight and flaky.

Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser formulated for your skin type. It’s important to wash before bed because skin rejuvenates overnight, so getting rid of oil buildup and dirt is essential.

Use plenty of SPF 30+. Sunscreen helps your skin look healthy and beautiful, protecting it from the outside in. Sun damage is the primary cause of wrinkles, sunspots, dryness, blotches and skin cancer.

Exfoliate every two months. Removing the dead skin cells allows healthy new skin to replace the exfoliated cells and breathe resulting in smoother skin and less acne.

Exercise. Anything that promotes healthy circulation also helps keep your skin vibrant and healthy. Exercise aids in increasing skin tone and maintaining elasticity from an increase of blood flow.

Take a multi-vitamin daily with vitamin D and calcium for a more vibrant complexion and strong bones.

Eat a well-balanced diet. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, minerals, vitamins and protein to keep your skin looking smoother, younger and to ward off wrinkles.

Avoid smoking and second hand smoke. Smoke alters the amount of oxygen in your blood, which affects the health of your skin. It can accelerate the aging process, causing the skin to droop, develop wrinkles and lines and cause dryness, broken capillaries and blotchiness.

Avoid stress. Stress can make your face age by a decade and the skin more dull and cause breakouts. Two grams of Vitamin C daily can correct some of the stress related skin issues.

Get photofacial treatments. Living at higher altitude increases sun-damage to the skin and accelerates the skin’s natural aging process. Photo rejuvenation helps reduce irregular pigmentation including sunspots, freckles, broken capillaries, rosacea and acne. It also helps with reducing the size of enlarged pores, thus improving tone and texture of the skin.
